Welcome to the Adirondack Scent Work Club!

If you’ve found your way here, chances are you already know that there is something pretty special about watching a dog use their nose. Maybe you’ve watched your dog find a hidden treat buried under the couch. Maybe you’ve taken a scent work class and discovered that your dog suddenly has a job they absolutely love. Or maybe you’ve seen classes advertised and want to know what all that sniffing is about.

Wherever you are in your scent work journey, you’re welcome here.

The Adirondack Scent Work Club was created because we believe scent work should be fun, challenging, inclusive, and accessible to everyone. Whether you have a seasoned competition dog, a brand-new puppy, a senior dog,a disabled dog, or a dog who simply enjoys having a job, there is a place for you here.

Why Scent Work?

There is something magical about letting a dog do what dogs were born to do.

We spend so much of our dogs’ lives asking them to leave it, sit, stay, come, walk nicely, and generally behave like civilized members of society. Then we introduce scent work and suddenly we tell them:

Go ahead.  Be a dog. Use your nose. Figure it out.

And they do.

Scent work gives dogs the opportunity to work independently, solve problems, make decisions, and build confidence. It can be mentally exhausting in the very best way. It also gives us humans a chance to slow down and observe our dogs body language.

And believe me, there is a lot to learn when you start paying attention to what is happening at the end of that leash.

Scent work isn’t simply about finding the hide. It’s about learning how your individual dog searches, how odor moves through an environment, how your handling affects the search, and how to recognize those subtle changes in behavior that tell you your dog is getting close.

Sometimes the biggest lessons happen when there isn’t odor to be found.

More Than a Club

We didn’t create the Adirondack Scent Work Club simply to have another place to take a class.

We wanted to build a community.

A place where people can come together to train, learn, practice, compete, share ideas, celebrate successes, laugh at the occasional spectacular NQ, and encourage one another through the frustrating days.

Because there will be frustrating days.

There will be searches where your dog finds the hide in three seconds and searches where you are left  standing there wondering if you have forgotten how to play the game.

There will be Qs that make you want to celebrate, NQs that make you question every training decision you’ve ever made. And there will be  those wonderful moments when everything comes together and you become a team, fluidly moving through the search area and you’ll realize just how far you’ve come.

All of it is part of the journey.

Our Philosophy

At Adirondack Scent Work Club, we believe in building confident, enthusiastic search dogs while respecting the individual dog in front of us.

We believe in thoughtful training, quality reinforcement, clear communication, and allowing dogs to learn to solve problems rather than constantly solving those problems for them.

We also believe that going back to the basics isn’t going backward.

Clean, confident searches matter. Strong odor commitment matters. Learning to read your dog matters. Developing independent search skills matters.

And sometimes the best thing you can do for an advanced dog is put a single hide in a simple environment and let them be brilliant.

From Beginners to Competitors

Scent work has something to offer almost everyone. For beginners, it can be a wonderful introduction to dog sports and a fantastic way to build a relationship with your dog. For experienced teams, it becomes a fascinating puzzle involving odor, environment, strategy, handling, and timing. And for those who want to compete, there are plenty of opportunities to put those skills to the test. But competition isn’t the only measure of success.

Maybe it’s getting your dog comfortable searching in new environments.

Maybe it’s building confidence in a shy dog.

Maybe you simply want to tire out your high-energy dog without throwing a ball 400 times.

Those are all legitimate goals.

What’s Ahead

As a new club, we’re excited about what lies ahead.

We’ll be offering classes, workshops, practices, seminars, events, challenges, and opportunities to learn from experienced instructors and fellow scent work enthusiasts.

We’ll also be sharing training tips, scent work education, club news, event information, and—because we’re dog people—probably a fair amount of dog-related nonsense along the way.

We want this website to become a resource for our members and for anyone who is curious about scent work.

Most importantly, we want it to reflect what this club is all about:

Learning.
Training.
Community.
Dogs doing what they love.
And having a whole lot of fun along the way.

So whether you’re standing at the beginning of your scent work journey or you’ve already spent countless hours following your dog around while they sniff things you can’t possibly smell…

Welcome.

We’re glad you’re here.

Now grab your dog, grab some treats, and let’s see where the nose takes us.

Follow the scent of adventure.
